Howdy, friends! While I realize full well that the beautiful fall foliage is long past us, I couldn't help but make autumn sort of the theme surrounding this newsletter. I attempted to send this letter out right when we were in the height of our color, and my computer froze up and erased it for me. Lovely computers! So I'll try to get back and do another newsletter more befitting the season, but I wanted to share with you a bit of the color behind our house. The leaf borders and the photos of me and Cloud were shot within five to ten minutes' walking time of my back yard, down along City Creek. Debbie is the photographer, and I just realized I was holding so tight to Cloud that I never took over her job, so I didn't get a single photograph of her.

This first photo, featuring, from left to right, Clay, Matthew, Cheyenne and Jacob, was shot up north of our home, just before our own color came on in its full glory. If you can't tell, my kids can make anything into a gun when they're in the mood to play cowboys. Here Matthew is holding a window scraper.

This one of me and Cloud was shot behind the house on City Creek, September 30.

BOOK NEWS

About two months ago I finished the rough draft of my book with Clint Walker entitled Long Arrow. I wish I could go on and tell you some more good news. This book is at a stand-still for now, and I can't tell you anything beyond that, although I wish I could be telling you that Long Arrow would be our new book for this Christmas. As you might be guessing, this Christmas finds us with no new book to share with you.

The good news is I'm fairly certain that one of two books will be finished some time in the spring. I am up to chapter 17 of The Secret of Two Hawks, and my new one, Marshal of Drygulch, is up to chapter 12. Marshal of Drygulch will mark the first of a series I have planned for years in which my boys and Cheyenne will, at least in name, be the main characters.

I am also working on book 3 with my brother Jamie. It will be called Ragtail Wind: Legends West, Book Three, and it's off to a firecracker start. We wouldn't want to keep the West brothers waiting too long, and for those of you who wanted to see more of Phoebe Stockton, from the first two books, she once again makes a major appearance. Be prepared for a few surprises.

As most of you know by now, we released books one and two of that series late last year and in March of this year. Disciples of the Wind and Reapers of the Wind both immediately became best sellers, and we are glad to announce that both are back in production. Pick up your copy while they're fresh.

NEW ENTERPRISES

Although as you can see I titled this section "new" enterprises that is only partly true. These first items, pillow cases that are handmade by my wife, Debbie, are brand new at Howling Wolf Creations. She has three in stock, as you can see in the photos below. The item below them, her birthday calendars, have been around for quite a few years now.

Pillow case prices are: $8.00 for one and $12.00 for a pair. Please order soon if you're interested, as stocks are being depleted quickly. I have placed a name beside each photo for you to refer to if you are ordering. Also, in case it makes a difference, the top two cases are cotton fabric, while the bottom is flannel.

Birthday Calendars

These birthday calendars, one of our most popular items, are, as the name says, good for all year-round. I will let the photos speak for themselves, but let me give you a little description of them so it will make sense.

The birthday calendars can be, and usually are, bought as kits and put together by the customer, decorated in whatever way they see fit. I can also make custom "cowboy or wildlife calendars," but I have no photos of these to send you at this time. If you're interested, drop me a line.

These calendars are made with the birthday of each family member or friend whom you would like to remember marked on a heart which hangs beneath "their month," with the exact date written on front with their name. Don't ever forget your wife's birthday again!

Below are photographs of two of the earlier calendars made from Debbie's kits. As I said, if you would like to see some of the cowboy or wildlife calendars, please contact me. Believe me, these calendars can come in very handy if you're as forgetful about birthdays as I am.

Prices:

Board, $10.00 (comes with month hearts and hangers for the calendar). These boards come pre-finished by Debbie, sanded smooth and with any blemishes repaired. If you would like them to have the knotty look please let us know in advance.

Individual birthday hearts, 20 cents each, including a eye hooks to hang them

Shipping amount depends on the individual order

NEW COOKBOOK, COWBOY STYLE

Introducing: The All-American Cowboy Grill

Well, folks, it's either feast or famine, as they say. Two mailings from Kirby Jonas in two days! I'm coming to you tonight to tell you about a cookbook put together by Ken Beck, Jim Clark, and Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, out of Nashville, Tennessee.

If you are into cookbooks, I think you will really enjoy this one. Especially because this one has a new twist. All of the recipes were contributed by folks who had, or have, something big to do with Western entertainment. Check out this list of names: Jack Elam, Frankie Laine, Audie Murphy, Hopalong Cassidy, Baxter Black, Clint Walker, Waylon Jennings, James Garner, George Strait, John Wayne, Fess Parker, Roger Moore, Kenny Rogers, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Chris LeDoux, Arnold Swarzenegger, James Drury, and yours truly, Kirby Jonas. Well, it was a pretty big list until that last one! haha Don't worry--the list goes on and on, and there are many more famous people in it. I just didn't feel like typing all those names. To say the least, it's one impressive gathering of folks!

The All-American Cowboy Grill cookbook came out in 2004, and it has just come to my attention that I might be able to provide these to my customers. What I would like is to have you respond back to me if you are interested in one or more of these cookbooks. They will be priced at $16.99 and are printed on thick, high-quality paper, with a heavy-duty cover, and ring-bound so they will lie flat while you are trying to cook up your favorite recipes.

Included in the book are two of my own recipes, San Cobra Chicken and Holey Sock Biscuits. If you've read the novel Disciples of the Wind, by brother Jamie and me, and the novel by me and Clint Walker, Yaqui Gold, you will know where these recipes came from. So drop me a line if you're interested in this great cookbooks. I have to get a rough count so I'll know how many to order. I'll paste in the publisher's description and below, for your perusal. This would make a great Christmas gift for that person who has everything!

Miracle at Sage Creek:
A Western movie for the whole family

My friends, I'm going to apologize in advance. Some of you, like me, have very little time to accomplish the things you want to do, much less to listen to the same advertisement twice. But if you are at all interested in the West, if you would like to find a Western for your entire family to watch, and if you enjoy a good old-fashioned feel-good movie, please take the time to listen one more time to my accolades of what has become one of my favorite Westerns of the past twenty years, MIRACLE AT SAGE CREEK.

I do not make one penny for saying any of what I have said or am about to say once more about this movie. I am making these comments in this newsletter form for the simple reason that I believe great efforts should be rewarded. Thadd Turner, in making Miracle at Sage Creek, has gone beyond what you will find from most modern producers. He has made a special effort to capture the 1888 time period in every way, down to the smallest details of the sets. He has gone the extra mile to outfit the characters as you would have seen them in this time, and even their horses are set up in period tack, as far as it is possible. And believe me, this is no small feat. Being historically authentic comes with a big price tag. But to people who study history as I do, it is very much appreciated. Now, if you are one of those people who pays attention to every detail, I cannot tell you that you won't find anything wrong. But the things you find will be few and far between. And the crafting of the movie is so far superior to most of what's out there that you won't even mind a little flaw or two.

As I have said before, from the opening scene of the movie, to the incredible theme music, the Indian flutes, to the direction, to the acting--there are very few drawbacks here. You owe it to yourselves to give this movie a chance.

Purchasing the DVD

Now for my quick take on the financial aspects of this project. Thadd will have to sell a large number of copies of the movie before he can even pay back his investors. Please help out the cause, and yourselves, by going to http://www.talmarcproductions.com/ and buying this movie straight from the production company, Talmarc Productions. I promise you will not regret it. If you are a fan of a good Western, you will watch this movie again and again through the years and always come away satisfied that you made a good buy. I am not a purchaser of movies, as I find very few that are worth watching more than once. Thank you, Thadd Turner, for providing us with one that is well worth the price.
