- Caution: The following joke is a bit rough on the stomach,
so if you're squeamish, don't read it. If you're NOT squeamish,
plow on!
-
- A young rodeo cowboy walked into a little roadside cafe and
sat down not far from an old man who was leaning over a steaming
bowl of chili at the counter. The young cowboy had struck upon
lean times, and he was very hungry and didn't have much more
than enough money for a cup of coffee.
-
- After watching the old man lean over his bowl of chili for
quite some time the young cowboy scooted over to the stool next
to him and said, "Howdy, old pard. That chili sure looks
good."
- The old man seemed to come from a daze and looked over at
him. "You want it?"
- The young man was stunned at what appeared to be a stroke
of good luck. "Sure, if you're not gonna eat it! I'm two
days without a meal."
-
- "There you go," said the old man, sliding the bowl
down to the cowboy.
- The young cowboy ate ravenously until all of a sudden, near
the bottom of the bowl, he discovered the grisly sight of a dead
rat. Unable to control himself, he threw up right back in the
bowl.
-
- Sitting next to him, the old man began to nod. "Yup.
That's about as far as I got, too."

- On that note, I'm writing to let you all know the progress
of the new book. First, I have to make a note here. I have not--I
repeat, NOT--been writing this book nor even working on the cover.
This book, Reapers of the Wind, has been written for a year now.
Everything that I could accomplish has been done, including the
painting, for months. However, it has been held up with the cover
designer while we tried to work out a few glitches. I tell you
that just so you know that my main goal right at the moment,
and where most of my time is going, is to the new novel I'm writing
with Clint Walker, Long Arrow.
-
- With that disclaimer, let me tell you that Reapers of the
Wind has just gone to the printer. As seems to be forever the
case, in spite of my best-laid plans there is something that
holds the books up. They say they print somewhere around 20 working
days, so I am expecting, and hoping for, Reapers of the Wind,
the second installment in the "Legends West" series,
to hit my door sometime around mid or late March. Sorry for the
delays. Without being a cover designer myself, all I can do is
send it off and hope for the best.
-
- On the good side, the cover turned out awesome, and I will
send along the latest version with this newsletter. I've taken
up enough of your time, so I'll get back now to working on Long
Arrow. If any of you are awaiting a response from me on any letters,
please know that I am still digging out from a bunch of messages
and am trying to get back to you as fast as I can. I hope you
don't think I've forgotten you. I've enjoyed all of your letters
and do my best to get back to them in a timely manner, but sometimes
it gets away from me.
