Wolf's Howl Newsletter January 7, 2002

Howdy Folks,

Well, this is one of those letters I don't like to write. But here goes...

I just got off the phone with Clint Walker, and after some long and stubborn arguing by me he was able to convince me I should come in May and not try to go there this month. He said Donner Pass has already been closed twice this year and it's not worth my getting stuck either there or almost there. He's right, too. I've been out in blizzards before, and some pretty bad. I sure don't need to be in one up on Donner Pass and end up having to eat my truck or my dog or my wife. For anyone who has no idea what I'm talking about, it's a joke! You'll have to bone up on your California Trail history.

Anyway, Clint and I did a little long distance brainstorming on the book, but suffice it to say that no serious writing is going to get done on it until after May. We can brainstorm and send ideas back and forth and call each other once in a while, but it's sure not the same thing as being together. By the way, Clint was picking my brain on how to sell items on Ebay, as he has some old shirts, etc, that he wants to list. I'M TALKING SHIRTS WORN AND/OR WORN OUT BY CLINT WALKER HIMSELF. So if you're a die-hard fan, let me know and I'll keep you posted. That means you, Dave... (But not you, Gina. :( )

Clint sounds like he's in good health. His sense of humor is intact as well. As we were talking, he wanted to say at one point, "they tried," in reference to the two main characters in Yaqui Gold. Instead, he said, "They twied." He laughed and repeated the words disdainfully, then said, "Nothin' wrong with me, just call me Tweetie Bird." He proceeded to start laughing, and just when I thought he had himself under control he started again. You know, I'd like to see some of the takeouts from his old shows. I bet they had some giggly moments. I bet the I LOVE LUCY episode he appeared in was a hoot. It was funny anyway, but probably much funnier behind the scenes.

Well, guys, that's the big news today. I'm working today on Disciples of the Wind, and it is quickly nearing the point of being sent off to my brother Jamie for his final proofing. Wish us luck. It's coming down to a money thing now, but if I have to I'll get a loan to make sure you get that one and The Devil's Trail. I'm not in the mood to wait around for a big publisher to answer letters, so I guess I'll go ahead and do it myself again. I refuse to sit in the palm of anyone's hand, especially anyone who obviously knows as little about Western novel fans as New York publishers seem to.

Christmas is over, a beautiful New Year has arrived, and it looks like there's a lot of joy in store. By the way, anyone who's wanting one of my custom horses or dolls, I have to warn you the waiting line is getting longer and longer. I'm working as fast as I can, but I'm just keeping my head above water. Be patient if you can.

Here's wishing you all a great year and all the blessings that can possibly come your way.
