- Welcome to Kirby's
world of custom horses. All of the horses pictured are based
on models created by
Louis Marx, the
best toy maker of all time. There are six basic Marx models Kirby
works from. These are, from most common to least: Thunderbolt, a standing horse; Comanche, a horse with articulating
head and legs; Buckskin, a horse whose head and neck
articulate; Flame, a solid, unmoving horse in
loping pose; and Thundercolt, the little guy of the bunch.
These horses are not modeled to represent any particular horse
breed, just to look like a neutral horse that can be painted
to represent many different types of horse. The higher end horses
Kirby has done are Comanches and Buckskins with heads, necks
and legs molded in a pose, and finished off with muscular detail
before painting and all of the horses with muscular jaws added,
ears turned, mouths closed, heads moved to different positioning.
This type of horse takes a huge number of hours to perfect and
therefore cannot be done cheaply, although Kirby keeps his prices
as low as he possibly can in hopes that anyone can afford one
of his horses. The horses are all handpainted by Kirby and signed
and numbered in sequence on their bellies. They are protected
by 5 to 10 coats of finish, and although this does make them
quite durable they are not intended to be a children's toy. If

Also, if you have any requests for a horse done like your own
beloved steed, drop us a line. Kirby does special work for customers
all of the time. In the future, be looking for horses ridden
in the movies and television by Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Clint
Walker, James Drury and many other actors. Also, Kirby will be
modeling horses after the major characters in his books.
