Palisade, Nevada. 1875. Jake and Jason West, brothers and long-time partners in gambling and carousing in New Orleans, have decided to make their way across the country separately and set up in business as a freighting company in Virginia City. On their way, both men are lured into a short detour to see the infamous little railroad town of Palisade, known alternately as "Plucky Palisade" and "the bloodiest little town in the West." Here, each brother is drawn to join in a range war outwardly viewed as being over land, cattle and sheep. Unfortunately, each brother chooses a different side. Without knowing whom they will face later, Jake and Jason become firmly entrenched on their chosen sides of the war. The central figure who keeps the war going is Sandoval Cobra, a former mulatto slave, who has been adopted into the wealthy Chamberlain family and has become an incredible fighting force.
